Bold (Ear)rings from Colombia and Mexico
The impact of glass, 3D printing, and clay on sculptural jewelry.
Back in 2019, months before the pandemic hit, a movement was already brewing.
That’s when five of these jewelry brands across Mexico and Colombia began their journeys, experimenting with diverse materials such as resin, glass, and 3D printing, some even cultivating a sustainable mindset.
One brand to note in particular is Blobb by Sofia Elias, who, according to The New York Times, got her big break when Suea Cho, a buyer for Opening Ceremony, visited Mexico and proceeded to place an order for 80 rings.
In recent years, other labels have emerged too. The Blobb effect, as I call it—mainly because Elias has been the biggest exponent internationally—marked a moment in time when jewelry became more about self-expression and playfulness rather than the status that precious materials might have given in the past.
