Emerging Fashion Shows in Mexico, Part 1
The platform Fashion Forward shines a spotlight on the 'real' Mexican fashion.
I am trying to simplify in just a few paragraphs everything I have observed in Mexican fashion over the last four years.
A rapid growth.
Extraordinary things have happened in Mexico since Yalitza Aparicio, the actress from Roma by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, appeared as the first Indigenous woman on the cover of Vogue Mexico in 2019.
Just a few days ago, Enrique Leyva, the Oaxaca-born and based photographer who portrayed Karen Vega—the first Oaxacan model to appear in an editorial story in the pages of Vogue Mexico in 2020—was added to the creative class of BoF 500’s new generation.
Karen, by the way, is also part of Enrique’s own agency, Talento Espina, which he owns alongside designer and stylist Pompi Garcia. Both of them have been key players in showcasing Oaxacan talent in fashion during this time.
All of this leads up to the historical moment we witnessed yesterday when Claudia Sheinbaum, the first female president of Mexico, attended her inauguration wearing a dress featuring…
